What's Selling At Auction On eBay?
Recently, we've written a lot ot articles about what's selling at auction on eBay and some of the results have truly surprised me. Of course, no one can know everything about what's selling on eBay - even eBay!

Did you know ...
* That folks will buy shower curtains with pictures of goofy looking monkeys on them? Yes, not even monkeys that look real, but really silly looking ones - kind of like Alfred E. Newmann in fur.
* That the Fendi "spybag" was the purse-of-the-year (didn't even know there WAS such a thing!) in 2005 but demand apparently hasn't slowed down at all
* That Ugg and Nine West boots sell even in the summer? When it's 90+ degrees outside? What ARE those kids thinking? ('Comfort above all!' is my personal rallying cry. :-)
* That pet drinking fountains can command large prices on eBay. I love my cats but they're just going to have to tough it out with 'still' water.

What Is Critical Thinking?
What is critical thinking? Quite simply, it's an absolute necessity for success in business, or anything else. Certainly not the only factor, but the willingness to sit down and examine our own assumptions is a quality shared by all great success stories.

Yesterday, we examined the foolish belief that to succeed on eBay, I need eBay to care about me. (I don't!)
Today let's look at another comment from the same author. When referring to eBay Certified Providers, he stated "Most of them CHARGE for thier (sic) services."
WHY does anyone try to sell on eBay? Is it for the good of humanity? To make the world a better place? To while away their endless hours?
Of course not. The reason people try to sell on eBay is to MAKE MONEY.
And good for them. That's entrepreneurism at its purest. If they can make honest money selling buyers products they want, then they are contributing in a positive way.
Yes, the author of the thought above is critical of eBay Certified Providers for wanting to do the same thing. To become an ECP isn't easy - or cheap. Applicants must pass tests and pay thousands of dollars for this desirable status. And no, eBay doesn't hand it out to just anyone. The crooks and scam artists aren't going to gain this coveted status.
Yet the author seems to think that after undergoing this tough process, ECPs shouldn't be able to charge for their services. How absurd! Why should the author be able to profit from his efforts - yet ECPs shouldn't?
There is a subtle prejudice against profit and wealth that runs through our culture. Everyone wants more money yet they often despise the very people who are successful at gaining it. Envying successful people only harms any effort to gain wealth. Here is an absolutely true observation:
This gentleman needs to expand his critical thinking skills and focus on abundance and he will have more of it in his life.

Wah! eBay Doesn't Care About My Success
In a review of an eBay book on Amazon, I read the following statement:
"Ebay DOESN'T CARE if you make money on Ebay".
I've heard this before and we need to examine this kind of thinking ...

1. I have issues with eBay but no one has ever accused them of being a stupid company. Therefore, their corporate policy forces them to care about the success of their sellers. Why? Because if sellers don't make any money, they will stop using eBay and its profits will cease also. That is simple basic economics and eBay certainly knows it.
2. Is there a single person at eBay who cares whether Sydney Johnston succeeds? Of course not. So what? I don't need for eBay to "care" about me. I need for eBay to attract customers who want to buy my merchandise. Period. That's all I want or need from them. My family will care about my success.
Does the author of the childish statement above think that Donald Trump is concerned if anyone "cares' about him? Does Bill Gates need warm fuzzies from his business contacts?
It's this kind of weak thinking that keeps people from the very success they crave so much. eBay has a BUSINESS relationship with its users - not an emotional one.

eBay "Best Offer" Adds Extra Features in Jewelry & Watches
Have you tried the "Best Offer" feature on eBay? It allows a buyer to make an offer for your merchandise and you have 48 hours to decline, accept or you can simply let the bid expire. If you accept, the offer becomes binding and all other bids are immediately dropped.
eBay is experimenting with features in the Jewelry & Watches category. Here are the enhancements:

1. Increased number of offers - buyers will be able to make up to 3 offers per item (increased from one), making it easier to come to an acceptable price
2. Counter-offer – sellers can respond directly to a Best Offer by either accepting the offer or making a counter-offer (in other categories, a seller cannot make a counter-offer).
3. Auto decline feature – sellers can set a minimum Best Offer price that they will consider. All offers below that price will be automatically declined.
I'm sure that if these changes work well these features will be added to other categories. If you're interested in the Best Offer option, here are the rules:
* Best Offer is available at no charge for sellers
* You must have a feedback rating of 10 or more (or be ID Verified) to accept Best Offers on listings
* To create a Best Offer listing with a quantity of two or more, you must have a feedback rating of 30 or more, and be a registered user for at least 14 days (or be ID Verified)

Questions: Time Management Tools Of Excellence
I collectt powerful questions. Questions can guide us like nothing else. A Power Question doesn't allow any wiggle room, it makes it tough to be dishonest with ourselves.
Good questions can be awesome time management tools. Paul Myers offers a question below that I have grabbed and will keep in my arsenal from now on ...
- - -
"There's one thing I've found to be more effective than any other, and it's the simplest technique I've seen yet.
I can proudly claim to have invented it myself. Unfortunately, like most techniques this simple, it's probably been invented by a bazillion other people, too.
I call it "The 5-Second System."
It's a question. You ask it, and listen for the answer. It usually comes to you clearly in less than 5 seconds. Act on the honest answer and you'll be surprised at how much more you get done.
The question is:
Try that for a day or so. It's free and effective."

Artificial Orchids Strong eBay Market
Since it's sort-of spring, I've been thinking about flowers recently and wondering about the 'live plant' business. Mailing plants isn't something I'd be comfortable doing, so I checked out the artificial plants and found that silk orchids are a healthy business.
The main reasons, of course, are:
1. They're much easier to ship, although the packing still gives me the shivers
2. They need no care while waiting for sale
3. They don't spoil
I doubt that you could have an entire business with artificial orchids, but they certainly can be a nice addendum to other gardening lines.

Google Base & Google Payment
It's hard to keep up with Google's services. It seem that just as soon as I sort-of figure one out, another appears. One of the newest, Google Base, is in beta. For auction sellers, it might influence eBay and PayPal and here's why ...

Google base is "a place where you can post all types of content and have it show up on Google."
Some of the categories fascinate me.' Coupons' and 'Housing' are pretty standard stuff, but 'Protein databases'?
Google is allowing sellers to accept payment through Google.
- - -
* Currently, you can accept payments through Google if you're posting physical goods for sale. You may not accept payments through Google for services or digital goods.
* You may only accept payments through Google for individual items you post, and not bulk uploaded items.
* Any items you post must abide by our content policies.
* You must be a U.S. seller to accept payments through Google.
- - -
Currently, only small numbers can use this Google-payment feature but that will certainly change. Goggle constantly tests out programs and then expands them. If more and more sellers use Google payment, it's almost certain to put pressure on eBay and PayPal. This will most likely be good for us because PayPal fees may have to drop to compete with Google.
Don't 'cha just love a battle of the Titans that benefits us? :-)

"The Insider Secrets of an eBay Millionaire" Goes Belly Up
A few months ago, the Internet Marketing Center, the late Corey Rudl's company, introduced an eBay course called "The Insider Secrets of an eBay Millionaire". This $197 course was the wisdom of an eBay seller named Brandon Dupsky. According to the advertising, "Brandon Dupsky Makes $22000 A Day On Ebay". Dupsky's company was Sell2All Inc., and he seemed to be an awesome success story.
However, this month Dupsky's company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy! It's sad for the company and makes Derek Gehl, leader of the Internet Marketing Center, look ... weak. Currently there are 32,000+ rave reviews on Google for this course. I see that the IMC is still offering this course for sale, which seems odd to me:

A sad story indeed.

An eBay Auction Business: Multiple Profits In One Niche
It's always wise to choose products that you can “multiply”. By this, I mean there are more products that will appeal to your same buyers, rather than focusing on only one item and thereby limiting yourself.
Of course, you have to grab their interest first. I once read a book about bonsai and learned that tiny birds were supposed to be able to fly in among the minuscule branches. That image has always stuck with me.
And naturally, pictures are critical. For instance, take a look at this breathtaking miniature tree:
Any bonsai lover who isn't awed by that definitely is NOT your customer!
So what else could you sell bonsai fanatics?
Educate buyers on both indoor bonsai plants and outdoor ones.
What about bonsai tree seeds in addition to full blown plants. They're definitely cheaper to buy and easier to ship.
And of course all those babies need a bonsai plant stand, whether indoors or out.
By thinking of alternative products you enable yourself to make more money with the same – or even less – work. I'll drink to that! :-)

If You Want To Sell On eBay - Learn To Write Copy
I am known for being blunt with people. And here is a blunt message to anyone who wants to sell on eBay: learn to write copy.
Yeah, yeah, I know. That isn't popular or Politically Correct these days. Everyone wants to hear how e-a-s-y it is and how f-a-s-t they will be rich. And without doing any work either ("We do all the work - you just cash the checks.")
All that bushwa is a big, fat, giant LIE. If you want the benefits you'd better learn how to play the game. And copywriting is a big part of that game. So here is a real gem from a great copywriter, Sean D'Souza.

THE SECRET MARKETING MOTIVATORS OF WEIGHT WATCHERS
Let's assume you desperately want to knock off some weight. And you're serious enough to get onto a structured eating system. Let's also assume, you were presented with two diets.
Diet 1 consists of: Chocolate. Cake. Maybe even chocolate cake. Pasta with Cheese. Some butter chicken. Vegetables. Fruit.
Diet 2 consists of: Vegetables. More vegetables. Fruit. More fruit. The occasional cake or chocolate.
Don't tell me which one you've chosen.
I already know.
But hang on a second. You said you needed to lose weight, right? So you know darned well, that Diet No.2 is the one to choose.
So why on earth are you eyeing Diet No.1? Because you know what you need. But it's not what you want.
You want to eat. You want to drink. You want to enjoy yourself, not watch in envy as others around
have a rollicking time, while you're on another silly boiled veggie diet.??
And that's where Weight Watchers comes in.
To quote their website:
"Eat all the foods you love on the Flex Plan”
Enjoy the full range of food options, while making better choices with the POINTS system. Choose any food, as long as you control how much you eat. Easily handle any food challenge, even when choices are limited."
Notice what they just sold you? Not what you need. But what you want. The people that go to Weight Watchers aren't veggie eaters. Not by a long shot.
The customers at Weight Watchers lurrrve their food.
They adore their wine.
They want their ice-creams and their chocolate.
And Weight Watchers gives them what they want--namely the ability to eat what they want--as long as they stick to the eating plan. It's the same reason why teenagers buy pimple cream. What they want isn't just the flawless skin... they want flawless skin so they can get a date.
So look at the pimple cream ad on TV.
What's it talking about? It's talking about the darned texture of the cream. It's talking about the
fragrance. It's talking about the new packaging. Oh c'mon give me--and all those teenagers out there a break.
They don't care about the whiz bang features of your cream. They don't care about your background or your company heritage. They don't care about your la-dee-dah packaging. They just want the date, get it? The date. Nothing but the date. And only the date.
So sell them the date, will ya?
Businesses make this mistake over and over again.
They try and sell software. They try and sell marketing strategies. They try and sell copywriting
services. They try and sell better websites. But does the customer really want any of the above???
Like hell they do.
If someone on the next block--or even the next planet, was able to promise your customer money,
freedom and respect, your customers would all be exiting through la salida, mucho rapidemente!
Yes, without so much as sniffing your strategies, software, websites or whatever it is you're
selling.
So listen carefully. Because what I'm about to tell you will get you more customers--and hence more profits -- than ever before.
Ask your customer what they want.
Then give them what they want.
Word for word.
Don't get all misty-eyed with the product or the service you're selling. It ain't going to help you
sell better. Or more. Or more often.
And here's what you need to do. Start with some simple research. No, not the $85,000 kind. Just
speak to your customers. And ask them what they want most. It's that simple.
You could even make a list of possible things your customers could want, and then get them to rate what's most important on the list.
Then collate the list.
And in your copy, put the things that your customers reeeeeeally want at the top.
Weight Watchers is teaching you a lesson... are you listening? They know full well what the customer needs. But they sell what the customer wants. ?
Because eventually by tapping into the wants, Weight Watchers ?is able to give the customers what they really need too -- namely weight reduction and overall fitness. Not to speak of improved eating habits.
The secret is always in the want.

As always, educating your customers is the very best way to increase your sales.

Outstanding Online Auction Listings
If you want outstanding online auciton listings - meaning those that make maximum money for you and your family - then you'd better learn to do your auction homework! And that means market research.
In an earlier blog entry, I mentioned a free research tool and some readers responded in very interesting ways.

Reader Lucky Hopkins replied to this with the thoughtful comments below:
- - -
In your most recent newsletter, you touted Mpire Researcher as a wonderful free tool. I have been using that tool for the past month and very much enjoy the marketing knowledge I can gain from it. However, it is not the gospel when it comes to data. Below I will explain.
What I've found is that this tool focuses on quantity, not quality. When it states that a certain day, time of day, or duration is best, that may not necessarily be the case. Those recommendations are only based on popularity, not highest closing bids. Someone who sells a lot and likes to end their auctions on Friday nights may skew the numbers enough to have that appear to be the "best time" to close auctions. However, I doubt their profits would be higher than other sellers who better know when to close auctions for the best results.
I found one Power Seller recently who sold enough to skew the numbers on one of my searches. They always use 5-day auctions, so Mpire Researcher showed that as being the best duration. Only 2 of the 25 listings returned were 3-day, but those two brought significantly higher closing prices than most of the 5 or 7-day durations ranked ahead of them.
I agree that this tool is quite valuable, but those who use it must look beyond what shows on the surface to get the most significant data. In the 25 listings which are returned, some end up being nuggets of very valuable information on how to do things right, while others are just fools gold and part of the masses.
- - -
Do I agree with Lucky? Oh, yes – absolutely! Let's think about what a research tool actually is ... it's a machine that takes humongous amounts of data and organizes and summarizes it. That's all. It doesn't matter who is compiling this data – whether eBay, Mpire or any of the other data systems in existence. The program simply follows the directions of the humans who gave it orders.
There are two important points about this data:
First, do the inherent flaws in any research system detract from its usefulness? No, it frees our time for the important activities that require a human brain.
Example: back many millenia ago when I was an eBay newbie, eBay saved six months of auction results, rather than the 30 days or so. I was looking for books that sold for $100 and up. I spent weeks finding this data. It was a horrible chore yet today a computer could ferret out that information in seconds.
Secondly, some auction tasks require a human brain while others don't. In my classes, I constantly point out that there are two activities that make money on eBay:
* Finding products
* Writing listings
Everything else is detail. And the thing about auction research is that it's only an INDICATOR. It's not the Oracle where a you-can-bet-your-life on it answer shoots out.
Having said that, is there any value in these indicators? You bet. If I'm selling an item and the research indicates that the best time to end my auction is 5PM, Pacific time, on Thursday, then that is where I will start.
But to just assume that's correct without testing is a very foolish way to conduct my biz. There is only one certain way to get answers to these kinds of questions and that is to test, test, test. What works for me may not be the right way for you to go. Testing is ultimately the only reliable source.
My students often get frustrated that there is no exact, black and white answer to some questions. But the other side of that particular coin calls for celebration! Why? Because most people are too lazy and too undisciplined to exert the patience to find out the correct answers for their business. They give up quickly and go on to the next get-rich-quick scheme.
Don't believe me? Then how can we account for the fact that only .003% of eBay sellers are making a full-time income as discussed in a recent blog entry? {eBay numbers of 430,000 successful sellers out of 141,000,000 registered accounts}
One last comment from Lucky needs attention:
- - -
“Mpire Researcher is like most other tools; it can be quite useful, but only for those who are skilled enough to use it effectively.”
- - -
Does this mean that unless you are a skilled auction seller, this research tool is useless to you? Not at all! There is no other way to become skilled than to do and do and do – until you understand what's going on. We're all novices in everything at some point in our lives. Learning to walk and talk are probably the two toughest skills we ever have to master. Thank heavens we learn those when we're too young to beat ourselves up for failing!
And you can gain very useful insights. For instance, here's a comment from an Auction Genius Course student named Sandra who definitely isn't a novice:
- - -
“That research tool you mentioned in the latest newsletter is incredible! Thanks for the tip. In just a few searches I have seen ideas that I might never have happened upon. One example was the way people spell my keyword - it happens to be one that is frequently hyphenated and the keyword analysis showed what searchers used most often. I was astonished to see how people used capital letters. Blows my mind! But now I know and that knowledge can make me money. Hoorah.”
- - -
The mpire tool is quite valuable and the price is certainly right since it costs nothing. :-)
Just use it as only one of your ways of getting the information you need to profit from your auctions. Be one of the .003%!

Women: Business Suit For Today?
Thanks to Auction Genius Course student Andrea for sharing the following funnies written just for us women. There is also a really hilarious picture of a woman who is indifferent to the what others think. Yee-ha! But before sharing, I will offer this picture of one of MY heroines who models the latest business suit for women:

It is good to be a woman:
* We got off the Titanic first.
* We can scare male bosses with the mysterious gynecological disorder excuses.
* Taxis stop for us.
* We don’t look like a frog in a blender when dancing.
* No fashion faux pas we make, could ever rival the Speedo.
* We don’t have to pass gas to amuse ourselves.
* If we forget to shave, no one has to know.
* We can congratulate our teammate without ever touching her rear end.
* We never have to reach down every so often to make sure our privates are still there.
* We have the ability to dress ourselves.
* We can talk to the opposite sex without having to picture them naked.
* If we marry someone 20 years younger, we are aware that we will look like an idiot.
* We will never regret piercing our ears.
* There are times when chocolate really can solve all your problems.
* We can make comments about how silly men are in their presence because they aren’t listening anyway…
Don't miss another great picture of the business suit for today's career women. Chuckle ...

Successful Selling at Auction on eBay
If you're going to be successful when selling at auctions on eBay, you need to ask the right questions. Here's an example of the wrong question (although it's a very common one):
“Will your course teach me how to build an eBay store?”

I've been asked this question many times and the answer is always the same ... No.
There is no need for me to teach anyone “how” to build an eBay store. eBay will gladly teach you that and it won't cost you a penny. The point is that 'how' is the wrong question.
Here are some better ones:
* Should I build an eBay store?
* If not, why not?
* If so, what are the advantages and reasons for doing so?
* What should I sell in my eBay store?
* How can I ensure the highest number of sales?
* How can I promote my store?
* How can I make multiple profits from every sale?
* How do I know when it's time to open a store?
Opening an eBay store is not something to entertain lightly. Just because we can do something doesn't mean we should do it. It's always easier to get IN to something than OUT of it.

Home Weight Machines Are SO Empowering!
I am now the world's #1 fan of home weight machines! Back in December of 2005, I put a picture of my Christmas present to myself on this blog. After three months of faithful use, I can tell you that I am transformed! In fact, this is the Former Me ...

Truly, a weight machine isn't enough all by itself. At least, not for me. Here are the three "parts" of my exercise regime:
1. Lifting weights: I chose this because my mother suffered terribly with osteoparosis and that is NOT going to be my fate. After intense research on the subject, I have concluded that nothing is better for building bones than lifting weights. Yes, I have free weights and I use them, too. But the discipline of my Hoist V3 has created muscle that I have never had before - even in my misspent youth. :-)
Small changes are occurring. For instance, I recycle all our magazines in a large plastic receptacle in our garage. Formerly, when it was time to take them to the recycling center, I had to drag the box along the garage floor and empty about half of it out before I could lift the rest of it into my trunk. But the last time this wasn't necessary. I easily picked up the completely full receptacle and carried it to my car. It was a thrill, I'll tell you.
2. I get some aerobic exercise frequently. Mostly, I walk but I'm also cutting grass, working in the yard or hiking around our local Stone Mountain (5 miles). It's important to get my blood moving and lots of minor aches and pains go bye-bye when I am faithful with this.
3. I've done yoga for decades and it keeps me relatively limber. Sometimes I'm very faithful, sometimes less so. And recently I discovered a new way of stretching that is absolutely magical! Not only do I feel wonderful, but it's fun. Anything that's fun is easier to do than a "should".
What will the Future Me be like? I don't know - but I do know that I am never going back to my Doughgirl ways. I feel so fantastic that the thought of not exercising in these three wonderful ways makes me quail. I've crossed over that invisible barrier that makes exercise a new habit and the old ways repugnant.
And what does this have to do with business? Well, the question is: will increased energy, vitality, enthusiasm for life and ease of movement help your business? It is certainly helping mine.

Auction Genius Course Announcements Improvements
We are tickled to announce that we recently added a permanent information center and bonus area for the Auction Genius Course:

Obviously, the Internet changes at supersonic speed and we've been bothered by how hard it is to keep up with changes. We often find new goodies or ideas and think about our students.
Also, bonuses change in relevancy. What was powerful six months ago may be obsolete today. Without having to make huge changes - and change all kinds of autoresponder lists - we can maintain the vitality of our help.
Hence, our new info area.

Online Auction Listings Prosper With Proper Research
If you want your online auction listings - and therefore profits - to prosper you better know what you're doing BEFORE you get involved with any products.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is that many people don't truly understand market research and don't bother with it or don't know how to do it. Well, good news! Now there's an absolutely FREE - and HIGH QUALITY - keyword research service!

Here is a partial listing of what you need to know:
+ What keywords to use
+ The time of day to end your auction
+ Best day of the week to end your auction
+ The best listing category
+ Average starting price
+ Whether it pays to use extra-cost features like Gallery, Bold, Featured Plus, Gallery Featured, Gift Listing
+ Average Sale Price
+ Highest Sale Price
+ Lowest Sale Price
+ The most profitable listing duration --> 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 10 days
How would you like to get this information at any time, for no cost? I think the folks running this site must be nuts, because I have paid for information like this but they're giving it away. I don't understand it, but I am happy to take advantage of their generosity and you should be too.
You have to register to use this awesome service, but registration doesn't cost you a penny. Jump on this right now while you can. It's one of the best deals I've ever seen in the auction business.
