Worst eBay Feedback: Handling Negative Feedback From eBay Buyers

The worst eBay feedback you can get, as a seller is a nastygram from an unhappy buyer. These days, ebay scams are so common that almost everyone on the net has heard of them. Unfortunately. The mindset of so many buyers is therefore one of suspicion and cynicism.

This means that an eBay seller's business lives or dies based on her feedback - especially if the purchase is a more expensive one. So any wise seller exerts herself, within reason, to obtain that all important positive feedback from customers.

ebay uses feedback ratings to determine each member's feedback score.

* A positive rating adds 1 to the score
* A negative rating decreases it by 1
* A neutral rating has no impact

The higher the feedback score, the more positive ratings they've received from members.

However, a member can increase or decrease another member's score by only 1 no matter how many transactions they share. This means that if Susie buys from Karen 10 times, only her first comment will impact Karen's score, although her other comments will be posted for all to see.

A feedback score of at least 10 earns a seller a yellow star. As a feedback score increases, an eBay user earns different colored stars, all the way to a red shooting star for a score above 100,000! An individual star is considered a "symbol of trust and experience in the eBay community".

In the early days of eBay, a user had zero recourse if he received the worst possible eBay feedback: the dreaded negative. Fortunately, however, policies have changed and the receiver has the opportunity to reply to any negative feedback. And some eBay sellers do this very well indeed.

As an example, let's look at a seller of restaurant coupons who has received what seems to be a horrible - in fact, the very worst - eBay feedback:

These negative comments are the worst eBay feedback possible.

Wow! 964 negatives in the past year! With such horrible feedback, we'd never want to do business with this guy, right?

Well, there's more to this story.

First, let's take a look at some of the negative comments received about him ...

* The first two complaints are because the restaurants didn't honor the coupons. The seller refunded the purchase price to one buyer and sent a "mega coupon" to the other (we can probably assume the value of this coupon was more than the original purchase).

Further, the seller says he removed these coupons from his inventory, and if this is the case, he will not be selling them in the future.

* The third complaint is about links that do not work. The seller responds with a toll free number. This is excellent customer service.

* The fourth concerns email being blocked by spam filters. This is happened to me many times and happens millions of times every day on the net. (Too bad, because email used to be pretty wonderful.)

* The fifth one is unreasonable - filing a negative feedback before waiting to see the response of the seller is outrageous.

The last ones, presumably from the same buyer, were positives, but aren't especially valid as far as the seller goes. His responsibility is the coupon - it is up to the buyer to choose a restaurant wisely. There were other such complaints as this one: "Portions were small, but good. Bread poor." How is the seller of the coupon responsible for bread quality?

So, back to our original question: since this seller has 964 negative feedbacks, would you feel comfortable buying from him?

Well, at this time he has an impressive feedback score of 121,676 points with an approval rating of 98.6% (August, 2004). Further, he has received 712,129 comments in all - meaning that almost 3/4 of a million folks have done business with him, and many of them are obviously repeat customers.

He has taken the worst eBay feedback and handled it very well indeed. Personally, I wouldn't have a single qualm about doing business with this smart eBay seller.
