What To Sell On eBay :: Online Auctions

Online Auctions: Marketplace Of The World

Online auctions might be just what you need if you're looking for a collectible or thinking about selling Aunt Maude's purple hippopotamus.

Since eBay began the online auction craze back on Labor Day of 1995, Internet auctions have become so popular that it's hard to remember when they weren't around. But why are net users so nutty about them?

1. They offer buyers a "virtual flea market" with an endless range of merchandise from around the world.

2. Online auctions give sellers a piece of net property from which to market everything from dolls, coins, designer bags, and thousands more categories to millions of international buyers. In fact, eBay is currently claiming 50 million buyers. For would-be net auction sellers, this kind of traffic is incredibly valuable, because they could never generate it on their own.

Further, the traffic is "targeted. Most folks roaming the net are looking for information. But when they come to eBay and other online auctions (yes, there is some life off eBay), they know it's not an information site, but a buying/selling site. So, if they are browsing the sports card categories, they are much more likely looking to buy, rather than simply seeking information.

Online auctions are bazaars. In most cases, sellers offer one item at a time, but sometimes sellers offer multiple lots of the same item. The auction web sites often refer to auctions of multiple items as "Dutch" auctions.

Auction sellers often set a "reserve price," which is the lowest price they will accept for an item.

The bidding for each auction closes at a scheduled time, when the highest bidder "wins." In the case of sales of multiple lots, the participants with the highest bids at the close of the auction are obligated to buy the items. If no one bids at or above the reserve price, the auction closes without a "winner." At the close of a successful auction, the buyer and seller communicate — usually by e-mail — to arrange for payment and delivery of the goods.

Online auctions are a total child of the net, because they have brought the goods of the world into the living rooms of every computer owner on the planet. The world truly is 'shrinking'!
