Items To Sell On eBay: Seeking The Elusive "Best-Selling" eBay Item
Items to sell on eBay are an ongoing discussion in Internet marketing. Everybody has an opinion, and expresses it vigorously - even if they're not succeeding on the famous auction site. One option that is rarely discussed is to ask eBay itself.
eBay has several help sections, because they obviously want their customers to find profitable items to sell (otherwise, they don't make any money) and one of those is "Category Tips". (http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html)
eBay rightly states that "Selling success is all about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right product." The question is: what is the 'right' item - meaning existing demand for whatever you want to sell. Unfortunately, most would-be sellers want to simply dive right in, without taking the time to do their homework and figure out, in advance of spending money with a wholesaler, if their proposed items might sell well.
In this category section, eBay offers the following help:
* Seller’s Edge: Get the competitive edge with insider strategies, features, and insights.
* In the Field: Learn how successful sellers maximize their sales and profits on eBay.
* In Demand: Find out what’s hot with expert picks and top searches.
* Selling Guides/Zones: Quickly learn the basics of selling in your category.
* Discussion Boards: Connect with other sellers to share experiences and best practices.
* Contact Us: Connect with your eBay Category Management team.

Experience has taught me that looking for hot items isn't the most efficient strategy, so does this page offer anything really useful? Personally, I doubt it. For instance, on the "Toys & Hobbies Seller's Edge", eBay mentions a radio controlled toy item Expo and invites sellers to participate in the eBay forums on specific products. "In The Field" is slightly more helpful, since it shares the experiences of people who are successfully selling on eBay. "In Demand" offers 'hot' items lists which are great - IF you know how to find suppliers (and if you know this, you don't really need the keyword services). Not so useful otherwise.
The bulk of advice from eBay centers around talking to other sellers. Getting sucked up in discussion boards is a trap I fell into years ago and have carefully avoided since. Nothing will eat up your day any quicker than this!
Finding items to sell on eBay has been, and will always be, the #1 concern of sellers and quite frankly, the 'usual' methods of accomplishing this aren't really so great.
